Applying Learning Styles Methodology in the Classroom
In the Teach Less, Learn More philosophy as set out by
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for the Singapore education service, a less didactic approach to classroom teaching should be adopted. Students are to be given opportunities for reflection and to apply their knowledge to real-life problems. Schools are to encourage changes in the way teachers each. As such, the challenge to enhance the capacity of our teachers has become of paramount importance. Pedagogy is a key lever for effective improvements in teachinglearning processes in the classroom. Such recognition should lead to the provision of continuous support within school in building pedagogical capacity, develop consistent and comprehensive pedagogical approaches among teachers, and in enabling them to modify and improve their practices over time. Applying the rationale of utilising strengths to education, the principle of learning and understanding, if matched to the learning task at hand, would result in students performing better and learning more effectively (Dunn et al, 1995; Callan & Perry, 2002; Choy, 2004; Ong-Ooi, Ng, Choy, Tee, Loh & Lim, 2005). One of the challenges for the teacher in the classroom of the 21st century is to customize teaching for learning to take place in various ways, at different settings and for different students.

According to Fisher and Rose (2001), students “do not all learn in the same cookie-cutter
fashion” and a “dynamic analysis of learning and development provides powerful new tools or understanding their variation”. Effective learning takes place when our instruction honors
the different learning styles of our students. |
